"No screaming guitars, no gym shoes, no car races. Without friction Michael Schumacher would be a lame nobody, Moses Kiptanui a sliding clown and Jimmy Hendrix would not have been a genious musician but a disdainful slowpoke. On the other hand friction is the biggest energy annihilator of this world. Approximately 70% of all energy gets lost due to friction. Already the old egypts transported their pyramid pieces on vats and slid them on trunks which they flushed with water against friction heat. Leonardo da Vinci constructed ball bearings to minimize friction. Not to say that friction is the origin of civilisation: No fier without rubbing woods or flints. Although known for a long time he knowledge on the phenomenon is small.
