The microscope usually measures both friction and topology.

In a real situation of course both forces lateral and normal to the surface are recorded simultaneously.

The above picture shows a 2.5 x 2.5 nm simultaneous topographic and friction image of highly oriented pyrolytic graphic (HOPG).
