A subtle tip is scanning the surface of the probe.

The dimensions of atoms (~0.0001 μm) does not lie in the spectrum of visible light (~0.5 μm). SPM have been developed to visualize the the surface structure. A subtle tip scans the surface line by line and reacts to topographical differences. You could compare it to a blind man who senses his environment with his stick.
