Tapping Mode

Tip and cantilever are put into oscillation. While moving over the surface the altitude of the sample is changing and thus the force acting on the tip. Hence the oscillation is changed. A laser beam reflected from the cantilever to a light detector records the oscillations. Using the amplitude we can calculate the force.
